Introducing Sossus Under Canvas, An Exciting New Venue In The Greater Sossusvlei-Namib Landscape

We at Ultimate Safaris are delighted to introduce our newest venture, SOSSUS UNDER CANVAS in the Greater Sossusvlei-Namib Landscape! Located on the private 24,000 hectare Neuhof Nature Reserve bordering Sossusveli, this camp is a mere thirty minutes’ drive from the Sossusvlei gate, the gateway to the Great Namib Sand Sea which has recently been declared a World Heritage Site.

Sossus Under Canvas will be built in a naturally formed amphitheater of a south-facing granite outcrop and it will open in April 2018.

This camp will be booked on an exclusive basis (tiered pricing for varying pax numbers) for each group we take there, and it can only be used as part of one of our privately guided or fly-in safaris.

The camp offers eight tents, two of which are family units, and it will be open seasonally between April and November, offering a fantastic alternative to any traditional lodge in the Sossusvlei area as it also offers exclusivity which is beyond compare.

Bookings must be for a minimum of a two nights as this is required to get a true feel of what is on offer, although we believe that three nights would be even better in order to do real justice to the area.

Quick facts:

•    Customized to our specifications, and ideally suited to Namibian conditions.
•    8 x shaded large square Meru tents (4m x 4m and 3m high)
•    En suite open-air bathrooms with hot bucket showers and flush toilet.
•    Solar lighting.
•    Central dining, lounge and fireplace areas.
•    Fully inclusive packaging inclusive of three meals a day (hot breakfast, freshly prepared lunch and a three course dinner), all local drinks and activities.

Recommended for groups of between 4 and 12 people on an exclusive basis, but also available for couples prepared to pay a small surcharge.

As the harsh desert climate is a primary consideration, tents will be protected from the stormy east winds by natural stone walls, shaded by roofs built from almost 400 recycled oil drums that give the appearance of pangolins, and equipped with furniture built in part from recycled metals and wooden pallets. As a result, this camp will be virtually invisible from any distance and, together with //Huab Under Canvas, it will carry the lowest environmental footprint of any camp in Namibia. The large west-facing windows and south-facing door will allow natural cooling by the predominant afternoon south westerly wind and the tents will have basic infrastructure that allows for important comforts such as en suite flush toilets and bucket showers, comfortable twin beds, solar lighting and a shaded day-bed, but the essence of the camp remains “Under Canvas”, semi-permanent, seasonal and experiential.

Ultimate’s Stellar Escape sleepout and the Milky Way

Activities will include visits to Sossusvlei with your private guide and general exploration of the private Neuhof Nature Reserve, including nature walks and drives, magic moments in desert pools (yes, isn’t that intriguing), star gazing, our pioneering STELLAR ESCAPE which is our very own sleep out, as well as a TRAILS CAMP offering a multi-day walking safari. There will also be the opportunity to visit the Plateau which offers some of the best views out over the Namib Desert, but only for those staying for three nights.

In addition to this, Sossus Under Canvas provides a convenient base from which to go on hot air balloon flights as well as scenic helicopter and fixed wing aircraft flights over the local area. It is also a great venue for photographers, offering fantastic landscapes, iconic quiver trees, and the opportunity for night time photography which is often very difficult to arrange elsewhere.

Access to the camp is either by road from Windhoek or Swakopmund, or from any other nearby destination, or by light aircraft coming in to a nearby airstrip.
