    COMMUNITY

    • Travel Ethiopia pays particular attention to empowering women.
    • Development of local communities – established Bilen Lodge in the remote Afar region, creating employment for 25 local residents. Through consultation and discussions with the elders of the local community, early marriage and other negative traditional practices have been visibly minimized. Furthermore, a certain percentage of profits from the lodge along with some levy on visitors go to projects which are prioritized as useful by the community. The funds from the lodge also support a nearby local school.
    • Encourages traveler visits to a village called Awra Amaba, in the northern part of Ethiopia. The village is a unique model for self-help and gender equality in Africa.

    CONSERVATION

    • Travel Ethiopia has taken the Travelers Against Plastic pledge, meaning they will promote sustainable travel and encourage travelers to avoid buying bottled water when they travel. In addition, we provide our travelers the proper information they need to treat their own drinking water when applicable.
    • Travel Ethiopia is also well known for its tree planting initiative. So far, Travel Ethiopia has planted more than 300,000 trees in various local communities affected by deforestation and erosion. Clients of Travel Ethiopia are invited to volunteer their time and join the tree planting activities.
    • Travel Ethiopia works to minimize damage to the environment, wildlife and marine ecosystems. We also encourage our clients to pick eco-friendly lodges and hotels.

  • SAMRAWIT MOGES – Managing Director

    Samrawit Moges received her first degree from the Addis Ababa University in Journalism followed by a diploma in Tourism Management in Italy. She was employed with the government Tour Company (National Tour Operation) 1982-1993. She then founded Travel Ethiopia in 1994, which has grown to 35 permanent employees, and was the first company in Ethiopia to employ permanent female guides. Samrawit is involved in several diverse businesses, all of which provide excellent employment opportunities for women. Samrawit serves as a Board member of the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce. She is a member of Toast Masters Club and an active member of Rotary Club since 1991, being the first female Rotary president in Ethiopia. She is also an active member of Ethiopian Women in Business (EWiB), a networking organization working to improve the status of women.

    ABEBECH DESTA – Tour Consultant and Supervisor

    Immediately after finishing high school study, Abebech was hired at a hotel in Mekele as an operator where her role grew to the level of marketing and front office manager, forming the foundation of her hospitality career. Abebech’s work at the hotel equipped her to handle and delight travelers, built leadership skills, gave her the courage to move to Addis Ababa for a better future. As a single woman in Addis, life was a bit challenging, but Abebech not only survived, but thrived. She has worked at local tour operators as head of the booking department, and just before joining Travel Ethiopia in 2013, she also held a role as a business woman. Abebech has worked hard to grow her career to this level and takes great pride in introducing Ethiopia to the outside world.
